A Case Study – Kansas City Boiler Room

Kansas City Boiler Room was commissioned in February 06, although its community had been operating for some time previous to that. They meet and run from a warehouse in central Kansas. kcboilerroom.com

1. Leadership

The Boiler Room is led by a core group of 7 and supported by a group of ‘guides’, people who have made some sort of commitment to the Boiler Room and bring a level of support and accountability. Joe and Angie Steinke provide mentoring/support/accountability.

2. Three priorities

a) Priority 1: D Groups D groups are groups of up to 3, committed to discipling each other. It was initiated to find a simple transferable idea of discipling people, which could grow with the community. It is also a way of training and growing ‘disciplers’. The groups are about the 3 loves, of God through prayer, of each other by asking 8 questions and of the world, by praying for the lost by name and committing to spend time with them. Adam explained ‘there is no control of this, we just sow the values’ b) Priority 2: Collectives An expression of ‘simple church’. These collectives are groups made up of one or two leaders and guides, let loose in their own sub-culture or area of commitment/passion. Groups are forming around the homeless, young people, a film club and people working amongst battered women. ‘In time’ Adam told me ‘these groups could grow bigger than the community core itself’. c) Priority 3: Family Gatherings The least priority of the three, but the team have felt that a regular family gathering of some kind is needed. They have just finished taking the whole community through God’s story and are now moving their meetings to Sundays. They hope to make these child and family friendly.
